Artist's Comments

A memory of a flood that occured in my apartment in Brooklyn. The painting draws ties to a psychological fear of mine, the mundane. As the time grows nearer for me to be out of school, ( Im in my final year of grad school) I fear the possiblity of working a less then perfect job for myself

Oil on canvas

Excellent work Tom. Nice composition and contrast, there is a good sense of foreground. I like how it's very warm and colorful...yet not.

Wow. Technically, this is just stunning, the monotone color scheme really gives it the feeling of being a memory, something of the past. It's just beautiful.

On the other hand, there are parts that bother me: To the left hand side, the potted plant and table seem to exist flat on the wall, like they are painted on the wall, I think that may come from value of these things, they seem too light to me. The bucket on the floor also seems a little flat. Maybe I'm being a little too nit-picky.

Besides that, it's just plain awesome.

Thomas, for being so young, I think you are very perceptive.
This painting evokes The Blind Leading The Blind for me - adults at the moment of being overwhelmed by life, groping their way through the mess like blind people. Perhaps they are going blind slowly; the loss of color is the first step.
It also reminds me of the ending of The Graduate, when Benjamin has triumphantly rescued the beautiful girl from the boorish Ken doll she married; they sit on the bus surrounded by crones and they realize that they are no different and that they share the same destiny as these ordinary people with whom they share the bus.

:whisper: Actually, getting older, and the process of getting there, is pretty great!

Im in a similar situation/state of mind.. love the painting. Greyscale paintings can be tricky, but looks like you pulled it off :) +Fav
